Storyline:

Well, for once, there's a 2D Sonic game with a fleshed-out story. Dr. Robotnik, stubborn old coot that he is, just won't let his grandpa's sleeping dogs lie. It seems that Gerald, while working on Shadow, was experimenting with a mysterious robot known as "Gizoid". The Eggman finds it and decides to use it to do his bidding. Only problem: the stupid thing jsut ignores him. And absorbs a Chaos Emerald to boot. After being fed up with the thing, as well as copying its tech to make one that listens (E-121 Phi, yet another entry to the long forgotten E-Series), Robotnik tosses the bot on the beach.

The next day, Sonic, suffering from boredom AGAIN, finds the previously mentioned robot and decides to take it to Tails for some fixin'. Shortly, the mech, whom Sonic names Emerl, meets up with the rest of the cast and learns from each furry. There's still a lot more to "Emerl" than meets the eye, though. Oh, and there's fighting. LOTS of fighting.

Personal Criticism/Opinion:

I had fun with this one. I'm a fighting game enthusiast, so I know what I'm talking about. The levels are, well, not very inspired. They basically look like arenas in the middle of nothingness. that bugged me to no end. But I didn't let that distract me from victory. For the moves, you basically spend your time slamming your opponents into submission. It's as fun as it sounds. Especially if it's someone you don't like. Guarding, healing AND charging your special meter are all used with the L trigger. This annoys me, so I just try not to be forced into a defensive situation.

As for the characters, they're not as balanced as you'd think.

Sonic, naurally, relies on his speed to get the job done. He's fast, but suprisingly not that powerful. His healing ability sucks, too. The Blue Blur ain't the best fighter to use, but it's his game, so he deserves to be played.

Once again, the 2D realm seems to favor Tails, as he's a well-balanced fighter. He's brought a number of inventions to the arena, and he knows how to use them. His flight isn't that long this time, but his speed is average and he has good healing ability so don't take him lightly.

Rouge's 2D debut serves her well, I suppose. Her attacks are based on her kicks and bat-like aerial abilities. ...Yeah, that was lame. Sorry. Anyway, her jump lets her hover out of harms way, which will get on your nerves if your against her and even if you're fighting as her (if you don't know what you're doing). Her speed is average and her healing ability, while a tad slow, serves its purpose.

As expected, Rad Red has quite a lot of power. Only problem is, he's been slowed down considerably, which may frustrate some. Knuckles favors earthen attacks, so be careful. His glide still hurts and and his healing ability is decent. You do NOT want to be attacked by him.

Sadly, you have yet another reason to dislike Amy: her cheap Pico Pico Hammer. The manual states that she can win a match simply by swinging it around. It'll be right if you don't watch it. She's somewhat slow, though, and her healing isn't the best. Plus, it's VERY embarrasing to lose to her, so be warned.

Cream, of course, lets Cheese to all the work. Her carefree skipping slows her up, but she makes up for it with her quick attacks. Her flight is slow but covers more ground than Tails'. Her healing is great as well.

Shadow arrival to 2D suits him. It's obvious that Sonic Team made a strong attempt to divert the Black Blur from his rival in every way possible. That being the case, Shadow's attacks are based on, you guessed it, Chaos Control. Unlike Sonic, Shadow's actually bothering to move at full speed, giving him yet another edge. There's only one downside to using him: his healing ability is worse than Sonic's.

E-102 Gamma (or Chaos Gamma, if you prefer) is unlockable from Story Mode. He's a bit faster than Knux and slightly more powerful. He can take you out in one combo if you're not careful. He can heal right on the spot, as well. His best (and dangerous) ability is activated when you K.O. him: he explodes, which hurts big time if you're near, so clear out when he's whooped.

Chaos (0 to be exact) is unlockable as well. He is, by far, the SLOWEST one in here, making him a sitting duck. His attacks pack a punch, though, so don't get too cocky. His healing is good, too.

Now for, the main character (besides Sonic): Emerl. Throughout the story, he learns a move from the characters he fights and is able to use them in his own systems, depending on the Skill Points. For example, you can give him, Sonic's running ability and Shadow's' attacks, or just give hims everyone's abilities all at once. He also has some Ultiamte skills that can to found in his Story Chapter only.

Let's see some GAMER'S PERSPECTIVE:

Replay value? You'll have to play Story Mode repeatedly to get all the moves. Or get them from a friend.

Graphics? Eh. They serve their purpose.

Music & Sound Effects? The tunes suit their locales.

Storyline? Depth-wise, it's on par with Sonic's console outings, and that's always a plus.

OVERALL RATING? I rate Sonic Battle as an 8/10
