CHARACTER
INFORMATION
Name: Amy Rose
Nicknames: Rosy the Rascal
(The name "Princess Sally" was given to
Amy in the American version of Sonic CD as a half-assed way to initially
promote the impending SatAM Sonic the Hedgehog TV series. The actual Princess
Sally looks nothing like Amy and the name "Princess Sally" is NOT a
nickname of Amy's, nor is even part of the Sonic Team continuity.)
Race: Hedgehog
(Speculation: If you choose to get technical, Amy is
most likely an African Pygmy Hedgehog, since that is the most common, well
known species of hedgehog.)
Gender: Female
Age: 12 years of age
Date of birth: Unknown
(Amy's DOB is generally confirmed as September 23rd,
since that was the release of her first video game. However, it is not canon to
the video game storyline, as her true DOB is unknown. If you find it necessary
to add her DOB nonetheless, September 23rd would be the most ideal choice.)
Birthplace: Unknown
Height: 90 centimeters (2 feet
and 11 inches)
Weight: Secret
(Speculation: After finding the mean in the weight
of most of the characters similar to her size and proportions and factoring in
age and size, it's safe to assume that Amy's weight is somewhere between 23 to
27 kilograms or so.)
Ability Type: Speed
Physical techniques:
(1). Spin Attack
Description: While in locomotion, Amy can curl down
and take on a fetal position, rolling along the ground as a ball at a very high
speed and rate of torque, meant primarily for breaking through barriers, or
destroying enemies. However, in her case, Amy uses her Pico Pico Hammer during
the attack in order to do any damage.
In-game debut: Sonic Advance 2, Nintendo Game Boy
Advance, 2002
(2). Spin Jump
Description: Also referred to as the "spinball
jump," Amy is able to leap into the air and curl into a spinning, tightly
compacted ball of destruction which can destroy enemies and break barriers.
Again, Amy needs her Pico Pico Hammer to it to be of any use.
In-game debut: Sonic Advance 2, Nintendo Game Boy
Advance, 2002
(3). Step Dash
Description: A technique very similar to Sonic's
Super Peel Out, but not nearly as effective. While standing, Amy begins to
quickly run in place, revving up her legs at a high speed before accelerating
onwards in spinball form along the ground. It seems to be her technique that
makes up for her lack of the tried-n'true Spin Dash.
In-game debut: Sonic Advance 2, Nintendo Game Boy
Advance, 2002
(4). Jump Dash/Homing Attack
Description: While airborne in spinball form, Amy
can burst forward in a sudden jolt of speed in a linear path enveloped in a
pink aura. When an enemy or object is near, the jump can be used to home right
into the nearby enemy or object with extreme impact power. Her Pico Pico Hammer
is needed to do damage.
In-game debut: Sonic Adventure 2; 2-P mode, Sega
Dreamcast, 2001 (it was then an official technique of Amy's in Sonic Heroes)
(5). Tornado Hammer
Description: Amy is able to jump up and swing her
hammer to stir up a powerful vortex of wind and tiny love hearts that can move
forward and sweep up her foes into the air and render them helpless.
Appearance: Sonic Heroes, Nintendo GameCube, Sony
PlayStation 2/Microsoft Xbox, 2003
(6). Invisibility
Description: Amy can somehow temporarily turn
herself invisible, allowing her to pass enemy eyes unnoticed.
Only used in: Sonic the Hedgehog (aka Sonic Next),
Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3, 2006
Abilities and aptitude:
(1). Although despite being not as
gifted with the dynamic physical abilities and skills akin to Sonic, Tails, and
Knuckles, Amy's weapon of choice makes her just as dangerous. When Amy whips
out her Piko Piko Hammer, head for the hills. If she packs enough elbow grease
in a swing, she can send very large and unwieldy objects sky rocketing. Even
Sonic & Knuckles get worried and are forced to tell her to calm down when
she unveils this real WMD. Amy knows plenty of ways to utilize this unique
weapon of choice ranging from spinning it around to form a tornado, a head on
slam with it, swinging it through the air as she flips, or even making it so
big that one has to wonder how she carries it around in the first place.
(2). Speaking of flips, she has good
acrobatic skills, when, of course, she uses the Piko Piko Hammer as somewhat of
a spring to propel her in the air.
(3). This is a pure mental skill, but
Amy's positive outlook gives her some border-magical ability to convince even
the most vile of individuals into repenting from the side of evil through
genuinely heart-spoken speeches. E-102 "Gamma" and especially Shadow
are prime examples.
(4). Contrary to popular belief, Amy
can be quite fast. Well…fast enough to keep Sonic looking behind his shoulder,
anyway.
Transformations/Alternate
forms: N/A
Hobbies and talents:
(1). Very skilled in predicting one's future with her tarot
cards and foresight.
(2). Excellent driving skills.
(3). Good culinary skills.
(4). Has some talent with all types of Extreme Gear.
(5). Enjoys and has some talent in seeking treasures through a
mix of dowsing and just plain searching. This may have added to her great
ability in seeking people she really wants to find (such as Sonic).
Weaknesses:
(1). Has a horrible habit of being the damsel in distress since
she is almost always captured and held hostage by Dr. Robotnik, having to be
saved by Sonic.
(2). If she was to ever be deprived of her Piko Piko Hammer, Amy
wouldn't possess very good skill (if any) in battle.
(3). Her love for Sonic often clouds her judgment. Usually, her
friend Cream is the one who puts her in line… if the tyke can overcome her fear
of Amy's outbursts.
(4). Can be very delusional at times and tends to get QUITE
pissed if the ironclad fact that Sonic doesn't share her feelings is ever
mentioned.
Physical Appearance:
- Coarse close-lying Pink fur
- Peach skin muzzle, inner ears, and arms/hands
- Large eyes with emerald green irises, black pupils and glassy
white sclera
- 3 pink furred curved, thick bangs coming out from her forehead
- 5 thick pink quills that extend downwards around her head,
much like Knuckles' quills, except a lot shorter, and seem to be thicker. Like
all hedgehogs, they appear to be consisted of many thousands of smaller spines
- Pink eyelids with two thick eyelashes on each.
- Completely pink-furred tummy with no markings
- Triangular, constantly alert and perked ears
- Small black and shiny nose, no apparent nostrils
- Small, slightly arched tail
- Broad pink furred feet with no distinct visible toes
Attire:
- A pair of white gloves, backed by
very thick shiny golden ring bracelets
- A rather flimsy red halter-top dress
with white accents and a skirt that flares out towards the bottom. White
under-netting keeps the dress flared out
- Red boots with white stripe accents,
metal soles and white collars (could be socks)
- Red headband that appears to keep
her spines down
- White panties/undergarments (hey,
they show up often enough)
- When riding Extreme Gear, Amy wears
a white and cerise vest with white trim at the bottom, a pair of cerise
trousers with white lines down the side of each leg, a pair of red and white
striped sports shoes with yellow accents on the top of each and a pair of white
gloves fastened in place by a red and yellow sweatband-like garment on each
wrist. She also possessed the primarily cerise colored Ark of the Cosmos which
allowed her to manipulate gravity. When necessary, instead of the trousers, she
will wear black skintight leggings.
Items & weapons:
(1). Piko Piko Hammer
Description:
A pink, yellow and red hammer, her premiere weapon. Amy doesn’t leave home
without it. When she pulls this baby out, write out your will and testament.
In-game
debut: Sonic the Fighters, Arcade, 1996
(2). Warrior Feather
Description:
A red and green feathery hairpin that attaches to the side of Amy’s headband.
This let Amy perform the Spin Hammer Attack, twirling around in a circle,
wasting any enemies that get close. Nowadays, she can use variations of it
regardless.
Appearance:
Sonic Adventure, Sega Dreamcast, 1999
(3). Long Hammer
Description:
Looks like her standard hammer, only purple, green and, well, longer. This
increased Amy’s overall attack radius during her Spin Hammer Attack.
Appearance:
Sonic Adventure, Sega Dreamcast, 1999
(5). Tornado Hammer
Description:
A small red hammer that Amy uses to create the wind maneuvers necessary for
Speed Formation.
Appearance:
Sonic Heroes, Nintendo GameCube, Sony PlayStation 2/Microsoft Xbox, 2004
Vehicle(s):
(1). The Breeze
Description:
A blue, 50's style vehicle Amy used in the Chaos Grand Prix racing circuit. The
Breeze had an oddly cheery disposition and great acceleration but poor top
speed.
Appearance:
Sonic Drift, Sega Game Gear, 1994
(2). Unknown Name
Description:
Another 50's/60's style red convertible car that seems to be equipped with a
turbo system that enables it to hover along the air over water, used in the
World Grand Prix. It can occasionally pull off a speedy dash at the detriment
of its cornering ability.
Appearance:
Sonic R, Sega Saturn, 1997
(3). Pink Rose
Description:
A pink and yellow Extreme Gear air board. Didn't do Amy much good in the EX
World Grand Prix, since she was quickly beaten by Wave. The Pink Rose had a
good top speed but rather poor cornering. It was later re-tuned and now dwarfs
typical off-the-shelf Extreme Gear models.
Appearance:
Sonic Riders, Nintendo GameCube/Sony PlayStation 2/Microsoft Xbox, 2006
Personality details:
Amy is a hedgehog who has an absolutely hopeless crush on Sonic.
That pretty much seems to be her gimmick. She first met Sonic by predicting
with her tarot cards that she'd meet him on the Little Planet since she
idolized the hedgehog and this immediately flowered into an all-out
infatuation. Amy always tries her hardest to impress Sonic, especially by
proving that she can be independent and do things (such as defeat Eggman) by
herself, in spite of how many times she is captured by Dr. Robotnik and thus
rescued by her true blue hero.
Unfortunately
for her, Sonic sees Amy as an annoyance and is not at all hesitant to head for
the hills if he so much as senses that she is nearby, since he knows that she
is prone to lunge right at him and hug him tightly. But of course, on the
inside, Sonic cares for Amy and considers her a good friend. But unlike her, he
seems to wish to keep it that way. Amy, however, would love to be Sonic's wife,
rather than just his friend. When she isn't obsessing over Sonic, Amy's
positive, protective, erratic, cheerful attitude and optimistic urge to pull
the team together is always beneficial to the cast. But like the hedgehog whom
she seems to love, Amy's temper can at times be just as short. The sassy,
quick-witted temper of hers is mostly accentuated vocally in the form of taunting
and verbal slurs. But when she gets physical and exposes that infamous Piko
Piko Hammer (which happens too damn often), she always manages to maintain
authority.
Historical biography:
All that is known with Amy is
that before she met Sonic, and to this day even, Amy seems to have skills when
using tarot cards or talent with the arts of divination and foresight. It was
with these cards that Amy Rose predicted she would finally meet her idol, Sonic
the Hedgehog, at the Little Planet.
When Amy
arrived at Little Planet, a bit later after she first met Sonic, she was just
as soon captured by Dr. Robotnik's latest invention, the Metal Sonic. As Sonic
watched the metallic duplicate fly away with its new hostage, he knew it was up
to him to save her. In the long run, he did, but, man...he had no idea what he got
himself into. These days, it wouldn't be surprising if Sonic regrets ever
saving her, however, even jsut a little. Because since then, Amy has always made a great effort to
stick onto Sonic like a leech, always hugging him, tackling him to the ground,
and asking him to marry her, among other things. Seeing as how the guy's too damn nice to just give it to her straight that he ain't interested in her, he just takes off running. Unfortunately, Amy's delusional self always assumes that Sonic's playing hard to get, which enamors her further. Geez...
Lately,
however, Amy seems to have made a much more dignifying gesture by trying to
prove her independence to Sonic. Many times, Amy has in fact managed to get
herself out of Eggman's clutches. Her training has certainly taken her far as she can certainly take care of herself. She will always try her best to impress her
true blue love, but although she may become totally independent, mature, and
(one can only pray) much less delusional, her hopeless crush on Sonic will
probably never diminish. Like they say, true love never dies.
Let's hope it does for Sonic's sake.

the brute in line, however), anyone who tries to hurt or date Sonic, etc.
Likes:
Sonic (a LOT), but she also likes hanging out with her friends
in general, she loves predicting the future with her tarot cards; she fancies
shopping, keeping track of trends and almost any kind of recreational activity.
She's also a boxercise fanatic and enjoys searching for treasure by dowsing.
Dislikes:
Seeing others unhappy, boredom, those with immoral thoughts or
evil intentions, anybody who seems to lack feelings or a conscience, being
bored, anyone suggesting that Sonic doesn't share her feelings in any way, and
of course girls Sonic seems to pay more attention to (which is a rarity, since
she practically forces him to pay attention to her by getting captured all the
time). She doesn't seem to appreciate Rouge's presence very much, either.

if her theme song is any indication.

GAME INFORMATION
Franchise name: Amy Rose
Original purpose: Kind of a love
interest for Sonic, although it's actually the other way around. She loves HIM.
He finds her annoying.
Current purpose: Hasn't
changed.
Date of first promotion/presence in the industry: Amy's first debut was in Sonic CD, released first in
Japan in September 23rd, 1993.
Years in service: 16 and still
going…
Impact on series: She’s the first female of the cast and the most popular of the girls. Those who are obsessed with the romance factor of the series (as miniscule as it is) are naturally drawn to her. The “Girl Power” factor is also present. Sadly, critics see her as just as big a pain as Sonic does and want to see her and the rest of the supporting cast disappear.
Original Designer: Kazuyuki
Hoshino
Design process: Unconfirmed.
Amy's design process was probably similar to how all of the others were made.
Many design sketches were made and Kazuyuki's Amy Rose was chosen. Simple as
that.
Possible design inspirations: Probably the most likely design inspiration for Amy is a hedgehog
character with the same name in the manga comics that were published in the
Shogaku Yonensei magazine a year earlier. The character's name was Amy and in
the storyline, she was Sonic's girlfriend.

Personal character analysis/commentary (by Nuclear Envoy):
Although, she may have been in quite a few pre-1998 Sonic games,
Amy didn't actually become a mainstream Sonic character until Sonic Adventure.
Before that, she was probably considered no more than the needed female
character to even out the cast just a bit, and of course to get a few young
female fans. Let's not forget that the franchise needed a character who can be
in love with Sonic. In fact, I go as far as to say that before Sonic Adventure,
Amy may have been a cult favorite since most normal Sonic gamers didn't buy the
generally exclusive and rather rare titles she starred in. Her fanbase would've
been much larger if she got more promotion, especially since she was quite literally
the only female character in the games. I didn't even know she existed until I
played Sonic Adventure. Shame on me, huh?
But now, when
you look at Sonic, the four most absolutely MAINSTREAM characters aren't the
ones shown on The Main Crew table of this sub-section of Concept: Mobius. Sure,
they're all popular. But the four characters that get the most promotion in
Sonic the Hedgehog these days are of course Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and guess
what? Amy. You need at least one girl, and since Sonic Adventure, Amy made a
transition from border-cult-favorite to mainstream.
With her
transition came a much more fashionable (well, not really, but it looks better
than her original) wardrobe, extrovert personality, and most of all, much more
successful promotion. Amy is now a very popular Sonic character, though not usually
as popular as the triple threat (Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles).
So why is Amy
popular? It's probably her relationship with Sonic in particular and how girls
seem to be more interested in genuine romance than guys. That's why you see all
those stupid Sonic character couple romance clubs on DA and even forums
dedicated to the idea (the most common one being SonicxAmy clubs, in fact).
Almost all of Amy's gimmick and premise is taken up by how she loves Sonic and
wants to marry him. That passion, along with her cheerful, erratic, optimistic
and outgoing personality is a magnet for girls. Especially anime fangirls,
since Amy is basically perpetuating an anime-ish schoolgirl crush stereotype,
especially with that very anime-cliché Piko Piko Hammer of hers. You'll
probably see that almost every Amy fan would love to see Sonic & Amy
finally hit it off. These are people who are as blissfully ignorant of Sonic's
views on dating as Amy is and are just as delusional.
