CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Mighty
Nicknames: N/A
Race: Armadillo
Gender: Male
Age: 16 years of age
Date of birth: Unknown
Birthplace: Unknown
(Speculation:
Isolated Island or Angel Island maybe? Just logical suggestions.)
Height: Unknown
(Speculation:
In his first game, SegaSonic the Hedgehog Arcade, in which he was NOT a Sonic
copy, Mighty's sprites were a bit taller than Sonic's. However, in Knuckles'
Chaotix, his sprites are of an identical height with Sonic's Sonic 1 and Sonic
CD sprites [which is what they were based off of]. So Mighty's height is either
the same as Sonic's or just the least bit taller. Anywhere from 100 centimeters
[3'3"] to 104 centimeters [3"4] would be a good height for Mighty.)
Weight: Unknown
(Speculation:
Considering Mighty's perceptible similarities to Sonic, one could easily
conclude that his weight is also similar. But, in SegaSonic the Hedgehog, Mighty
is a little larger, plus, Mighty is a year older than Sonic and last but not
least: he is strong, which concludes that he possesses a lot of lean body mass.
He shouldn't weigh that much more than Sonic since he is the fastest character
in Knuckles' Chaotix, but enough to mark a considerable difference. An ideal
estimate would be around 37 to 39 kilograms [81 to 85 lbs].)
Ability Type: N/A (Presumably
Power or Speed)
Physical techniques:
(1). Spin
Attack
Description: While in
locomotion, Mighty can curl down and take on a fetal position, rolling along
the ground as a ball at a very high speed rate of torque, meant primarily for
breaking through barriers, or destroying enemies.
In-game debut: Knuckles'
Chaotix, Sega 32X, 1995
(2). Spin Jump
Description: Also referred to
as the "spinball jump," Mighty is able to leap into the air and curl
into a spinning, tightly compacted ball of destruction which can destroy
enemies and break barriers.
In-game debut: SegaSonic the
Hedgehog, Arcade, 1993
(3). Spin Dash
Description: Originally named
the "Super Spin Dash," Mighty is able to curl down and begin revving
up, taking on a diagonally pivoted, ovular shape. Once unleashed, Mighty blasts
forward in an acceleration roll of high speeds with limited airborne
capability, meant to break barriers or mow down enemies.
In-game debut: Knuckles'
Chaotix, Sega 32X, 1995
Abilities and aptitude:
(1). As his
name suggests, Mighty is very strong. He can lift and throw his team mates with
ease.
(2). As far as
physical techniques go, Mighty seems to be a run-of-the-mill Sonic character.
His legs, however, are particularly strong since Mighty can wall kick from wall
to wall, even if each plane is very far apart. Using the combined strength of
his hands and feet, Mighty can even scale a single 90 degree surface.
(3). Obviously,
his leg strength can make him pretty damn fast.
Hobbies and talents: Has a hobby
as a world traveler.
Weaknesses: No known weaknesses.
Physical Appearance:
- Short, close-lying black fur
- Yellowish-tan skin muzzle
- Very thin and wiry yellow-tan skin
arms. They have a lot more strength than they initially appear to have on first
glance
- Long and thin black-furred legs
- Yellowish-tan skin upright-oval marking
on tummy
- Large eyes with black pupils/irises?
and glassy white sclera
- Yellowish-tan skin ears that peek out
from under his head armor
- Contoured red armor adorns his scalp,
forehead, and entire back past his posterior
- Very long, pointed black and shiny nose
with no apparent nostrils
Attire:
- A pair of
white gloves with large, sock-like cuffs
- A pair of red
sneakers with a single patch of white on top, and white resin soles
- White socks (Speculation: They may be a part of the shoe.
But we'll perhaps never know this for certain)
Personality details:
Although he may go by the name Mighty, he
is an armadillo who detests violence and acts with a very gentle and caring
conduct. Mighty the Armadillo loves to travel and his dream is to travel to all
places of the world. Such an outgoing desire has resulted in a very easygoing
critter, in spite of his perceptible might. However, if a most dramatic and
dire of plights is present, he'll take on an uncanny change and fight until the
opposition throws in the white towel. But for the most part, Mighty is simply a
pacifist. He loves peace and he loves discovering new places and things, and
carries out his actions gently and with consideration.
Historical biography:
One
Mighty the Armadillo has always had an affinity for travel, even though his way
of traveling might be a little more organized and structured than Sonic's. Like
the blue blur, however, this Armadillo just pays attention to where his feet
move and he never knows where he might be swept off to. Sadly, his knack for
voyage has gotten him into some major-domo trouble on two occasions: the first
of which he was captured with his new friends Sonic the Hedgehog and Ray the
Flying Squirrel by Dr. Robotnik on Eggman Island. The newly befriended triple
threat managed to work together and thus escape, in the end, dismounting
Eggman's tower that watched over his newly claimed island, thus putting a stop
to his diabolical motives.
The
second mishap was Mighty's involvement at Dr. Robotnik's Newtrogic High Zone.
His arrival on the island was purely by chance, as conducted by his love for
travel. Unfortunately, his arrival was in the event of his second incarceration
in Eggman's new Combi-Confiner machine. Mighty was stuck in time within the
confines of the combi-confiner booth. Luckily, thanks to the heroic efforts of
Knuckles the Echidna and Espio the Chameleon, Mighty, along with Vector and
Charmy were freed, and they all worked together to stop Eggman's plan.
Mighty's
sense of travel seems to have caught right back up after that, since Mighty has
gone his separate ways along with Knuckles while Vector, Espio, and Charmy
seemed to have formed a tight bond. Mighty the Armadillo has not been seen
since, but we can be quite sure he is enjoying his many journeys filled with
virtue and fortune.

GAME INFORMATION
Franchise name: Mighty
the Armadillo
Original purpose: Supporting
role in SegaSonic the Hedgehog.
Current purpose: N/A; character
is scrapped.
Date of first promotion/presence in the industry: Mighty's debut in the industry came along
with the release of the Arcade title, SegaSonic the Hedgehog, released first in
Japan on June of 1993.
Years in service: Just a little
under two years; Mighty hasn't been seen since his role in Knuckles' Chaotix,
first released in the USA on March of 1995.
Impact on series/Likelihood of a possible
return: Mighty is very
popular among the fanbase for a scrapped character (more so than Fang), and
Sonic Team knows this. The return of the other three Chaotix boys is proof of
that. His continued tenure in the comic books is also widely appreciated. Thus,
Mighty's chances of a return are slightly possible. But in the end, like the
rest of the Chaotix, it would depend entirely on how well he'd fit into the
continuity and if he could be given a direct purpose. Can you think of how he
could be shoved into the affairs of Sonic & the gang?
Original Designer: Unconfirmed.
Naoto Ohshima, perhaps?
Design process: Unconfirmed.
It's possible Mighty may have been designed before even Sonic, since the two
final concept characters for Sega's mascot were an armadillo and a hedgehog.
Possible design inspirations: No
known design inspiration. Mighty seems to be completely original.

Personal character analysis/commentary (by Nuclear Envoy):
Mighty the Armadillo is by far the most well-known
and popular of the scrapped characters. This baffles me he hasn't starred in as
much games as Fang: his best competition for most-popular scrapped character.
Not to mention, one of Mighty's titles is pretty much impossible find, while
the other is a cult favorite.
Mighty's got a rather unusual background in the
franchise. His presence in SegaSonic Arcade is barely acknowledged by many
fans, leading them to thinking he is a Sonic carbon copy since his Chaotix
sprites are identical to the Sonic sprites in Sonic Crackers/Studium: the Sonic
4 prototype that eventually resulted in Chaotix. Mighty is indeed a carbon copy
of Sonic in Chaotix, but as a whole, he is not at all a copy of Sonic, since he
was made before Chaotix and starred in a game prior.
His true roots, however, may possibly go back even
further. In the conceptual stages of Sonic, the competition for who got to be
Sega's mascot lowered down to an armadillo and a hedgehog. Is it possible that
this armadillo concept may have been or at leased looked like Mighty? Who
knows. If so, then that means Mighty's history in the franchise is strikingly
similar to Vector's. Except Vector has made a return and Mighty hasn't. It's
unlikely Mighty will return if the rumor that his creator left Sega and took
the copyrights with him is true. Which leads me to my theory that Ohshima
created Mighty. Ohshima was responsible for most of the concept characters
prior to Sonic's creation, so he may have sketched out that armadillo Sonic was
up against. But most of all, Ohshima left Sega after Sonic Adventure's release,
just like the anonymous creator of Mighty.
However, going against the rumor is the fact that
two images of Mighty are unlockable in Sonic Gems Collection in the museum
mode. So at least Sonic Team still acknowledges Mighty these days. Plus, just
because someone may have designed Mighty doesn't necessarily mean that the
character is copyrighted to him/her. The character belongs to SEGA and SEGA
only. If this rumor was plausible, then that would make Sonic non-existent
since Naoto Ohshima could've taken the copyrights to Sonic with him. But he
couldn't. He may have designed the character, but he did it FOR Sega.
