Personality details: E-102 "Gamma", like any of Eggman's robots, was of course created with a "master entry" in its registry, which cites that by no means is this robot to disobey or defy its creator and master, Dr. Robotnik. But other than that one command, E-102 was nonetheless gifted with a limited personality, which appropriately is very serious, bland, monotonous, somewhat patient, and determined to accomplish whatever his master commands. This personality was still maintained even after Gamma became self aware and deleted the master entry from its registry, giving him complete free will… all of it except accomplishing what his master commands.
Historical biography:
E-102 (Codename: Gamma") was created as the third model of Eggman's new E-100 series, which at the time consisted of E-100 α (Alpha AKA Zero), E-101 β (Beta), E-102 γ (Gamma), E-103 δ (Delta), E-104 ε (Epsilon), and E-105 ζ (Zeta). None of them had any specific purpose or motive other than to just obey Eggman and fulfill his commands when ordered. Gamma himself was processed in the lobby of Dr. Robotnik's Final Egg base, where his powersource was a small pink bird. Upon activation, he was put through an obstacle course to test his firepower and abilities, in which he obviously succeeded, to Eggman's surprise. Soon after, for a battle skill test, he was pitted against his very "brother," E-101 "Beta", for crewmanship on the Egg Carrier. Gamma managed to defeat Beta as well, earning himself a place amongst the Egg Carrier crew. Beta, after some oddly persistent budging, gained "special permission" from Eggman to join Gamma aboard. After all, you can never have enough spare parts.
Soon after Eggman lifted off the Egg Carrier skyship, the E-100 series (all except Alpha and Beta) were deployed for their very first official mission, which was to retrieve a frog that had an oddly suspicious tail on it. Sound familiar? Yes, they were sent out to go find Big's frog! This was because not only did the frog have something of much importance to Eggman at the time (namely, a Chaos Emerald), but it also had Chaos' missing tail. Each of them returned with frogs in their possession; all of them having the incorrect catch except Gamma, who managed to swipe the frog right from under Big the Cat's nose. Pleased with Gamma's success, Dr. Robotnik praises the robot and takes the frog to get his prized Chaos Emerald and appendage for Chaos. However, not pleased with the other 3, Eggman banishes them far, far away. As E-103 Delta looked at Gamma before he disappeared, Gamma felt oddly guilty. But it was disregarded as soon as Gamma was ordered to confront one of Eggman's prisoners; a cute pink hedgehog we all know and ...tolerate.
Strangely enough, Gamma took a wrong turn and found himself in an unfamiliar room. Upon realizing this, he spotted various discarded parts. The parts seemed eerily familiar to Gamma and as he ventured further in, he saw why...they belonged to his brother, E-101 Beta, who had stripped himself of his inferior weaponry and limbs to endure a horrific looking upgrade. Gamma witness this in the making and it shook the robot to his core...but was put aside in favor of focusing on Eggman's order to confront the prisoners.
Apparently, Amy Rose was currently keeping watch over a small teal-colored bird. This bird was wearing a pendant around its neck that contained a Chaos Emerald in it, which is what Gamma was sent to retrieve. Repeatedly, Gamma commanded Amy Rose to hand over the crucial avian, but Amy wouldn't budge, knowing they would do something horrible with the bird were she to give it to him. Gamma asked why the bird was so important to her, which resulted in a heart-felt speech by Amy concerning how it must be horrible to lack feelings and a heart, things the robot naturally finds illogical. Gamma didn't seem to take the speech with any consideration… that is until the bird Amy was protecting somehow sensed something deep within the metal shell of E-102. Gamma also felt a spark once it saw the bird up close, overriding Dr. Robotnik's command as Gamma instead freed Amy and the bird, urging them to leave quickly.
After a quick thanks and befriending, Amy and the bird hightailed it right out of there, leaving Gamma to question his well-being. But his moment of reflection didn't last long since he was immediately ordered by Eggman to go to the deck of the Egg Carrier where he confronted, for the first time, Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower.
As the battle ensued, Gamma gained the upper hand for a time, but with some quick maneuvering and an unintentional distraction by Amy, Gamma was thus dismantled by the speedy blue blur and his sidekick. Eggman made off with the Chaos Emerald he managed to snatch from the bird himself, unknowingly leaving Gamma's malfunctioning hide to the mercy of Sonic and Tails. As the duo ran in for the final blow, they were intercepted by Amy, who told them to please stop since Gamma was a friend of hers and that he saved her. Sonic hesitantly submitted to Amy's plea (she had her reasons, obviously) as he instead ordered Tails to get Amy off the soon to be sinking Carrier and went off to the bridge to confront Eggman. Amy said her goodbyes to Gamma, who managed to make a full recovery from his malfunctions, and strongly advised the robot to abandon his cruel master. Amy was airlifted off of the Egg Carrier by Tails, while Gamma instead went on his own mission and leaped off of the Egg Carrier, hovering towards the Mystic Ruins.
As Gamma slowly hovered towards the ground, he began to consider Dr. Robotnik's authority (and sanity) and why he was obeying Eggman in the first place. Images of his exiled brothers, the horrible reassembling of Beta, Amy and Dr. Robotnik, and a picture of that bird along with two of its siblings rapidly relayed in his CPU, soon stopping on Eggman's. Gamma decided to erase the master entry from his registry, giving himself a free will. His mission? To seek out all E-100 series robots and destroy them, freeing the animals inside.
One by one, Gamma found the banished siblings of his lineage and destroyed their metal exteriors, liberating the animals inside. All that was missing was Beta (Zero was destroyed by Amy). Gamma was now seen on the Egg Carrier, which was floating along the ocean waters since it had recently crashed. Up on the highest point of the Egg Carrier, Gamma had finally confronted Beta, who was now in an all-new, upgraded template much more advanced than Gamma's and hell-bent on getting revenge on his "younger" sibling. In the end, Gamma managed to defeat Beta mark II, but also suffered severe damage himself, thanks to a cheap shot by Beta. Beta exploded to free a small, beige colored bird that looked exactly like the relative of the teal bird Amy was watching in the picture Gamma had in his registry.
Soon after, Gamma also collapsed; beams of light bearing throughout each nook and cranny around the robot as it exploded to free a small pink bird. Turns out, both of these birds were the relatives of the bird Amy was protecting. She knew this, hence the reason she was there — to reunite her bird with them. Soon after the three of them reunited and flew away, Amy ran back off to Station Square with a major sense of accomplishment. E-102 "Gamma" the robot was destroyed. However, E-102 "Gamma" the bird was finally free and reunited with its family.
The destruction of all of these robots soon discontinued the E-100 series, with E-123 "Omega" being the last. Several series with obvious shades of the E-100 series were later made, such as the E-1000 series and the Chaos Gamma model, all of which have an appearance inspired by E-102 "Gamma". In the end, however, none of them match up to the determined, free-willed E-102 "γ".

Personal character analysis/commentary (by Nuclear Envoy):
Although, he is not nearly as recognized, E-102 Gamma was a robot character of Eggman's that actually went more indepth than Metal Sonic. His creation process was shown and his entire existence was playable in Sonic Adventure. E-102 Gamma's neat appearance luckily makes up for his dull personality, so he is pretty cool. Although, it was kind of a turn-off seeing the big bad robot actually be a small bird that is pink, of all colors.
There isn't a lot to say about Gamma. Albeit, his personality is dull, his seriousness and bluntness is pretty admirable. He just seems like somebody who doesn't take crap from anybody. That is until he was destroyed, thus why there isn't a lot to say. Gamma's existence was short, although, integral to the game.
What is unique about Gamma though, is that even though he was destroyed, shades of Gamma always pop in Sonic games these days. The E-1000 robots in Sonic Adventure 2, E-123 "Omega," and Chaos Gamma in Sonic Battle are prime examples. In the end, the evaluation on Gamma is pretty much a standard one. He was made for Sonic Adventure but his spirit lives on. That's more than what can be said about a lot of the older scrapped characters.
